Push being made to reduce size of Metro Council

Posted: Updated:

Many Davidson County voters will open their mail on Friday to find a new push to reduce the size of the Metro Council.

Voters will be asked to sign a petition to drop the Metro Council from 40 members to 27.

Councilwoman Emily Evans is working to get it passed.

She said Nashville has the third largest council, just behind Chicago and New York.

Councilman Phil Claiborne said a smaller council will limit community interaction.

"A large council is like a large classroom," said Evans. "It's harder to manage. It's harder to communicate effectively within the body and within the public."

"We have 40 people from all over the county who participate in the governing body of our city," said Claiborne. "If you reduce that to 27, then you have less opportunity for people to participate."

If the campaign gets enough signatures, it would force a countywide vote on a Metro Charter amendment in November.
