Future of RCA Studio A remains uncertain

Posted: Updated:

Pat McMakin is a professional recording engineer, producer and songwriter who spends hours at Ocean Way Recording on Music Row.

As vice president of the Music Industry Coalition he's concerned that spaces like this could be losing their identity on the row as new development moves in.

"All of those small businesses that are on Music Row, we're trying to retain a presence here," McMakin said.

MIC members like Ben Folds have been outspoken for months against the sale of RCA Studio A.

Almost everyone now would agree the sale comes as no surprise. But what does come as a shock is the news that it could be resold, further removing local musicians from the score.

Tim Reynolds, president of Brentwood-based Bravo Development, who bought the building, said on Monday that he is in talks with an out-of-state developer who is interested in the property.

He would not offer details on the plans and said he had no idea what the building's future will be.

Reynolds said that the building is in bad shape, with bad wiring, poor plumbing, mold and asbestos.

He sent a letter to current tenants outlining new lease agreements and rental costs associated with the building's upkeep.

Meanwhile, McMakin and other members of MIC fear the rising costs that come with new development could push small music businesses out.

While vocal about wanting to keep Music Row intact, McMakin sang a slightly different tune about Studio A, saying saving the studio was never MIC's primary goal.

"Studio A was a catalyst for us to get organized, but it is not, by any stretch of the imagination, the only thing we are concerned with," he said.

He says their focus now is making sure they have a voice that won't be muted when decisions are made about what comes to Music Row.
