Williamson Co. issues warning about phone scam

Posted: Updated:
FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

The Williamson County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a telephone scam involving someone who claims to represent the Internal Revenue Service.

The sheriff's office said the callers tell victims they owe taxes to the IRS and that they will be arrested or their property will be seized if they do not pay immediately.

The victims are then asked to buy a prepaid card, deposit money on it and then give the caller the card number.

The sheriff's office said the IRS does not ask taxpayers for money over the phone and that IRS employees will always make contact by mail.

Anyone who receives calls like these is asked to report them to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office at (615) 790-5550 or their local police department. They are also asked to report to the U.S. Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484.
