Some pushing for regulations for Nashville pedal taverns

Posted: Updated:

Riding through downtown Nashville, it's hard to miss the cheers, the pedaling feet, the big wooden top, and of course, the beer that travels with the Nashville Pedal Tavern.

The party on wheels is an attraction that's drawing tourists from all over the country.

But in the few years that it's been around, these pedal taverns haven't been licensed or regulated with the city's transportation licensing commission.

"They're basically having to act like any other vehicle on the street making sure they follow the rules that are there for cars and other vehicles," said Billy Fields, director of the Metro Transportation Licensing Commission.

Fields said they don't have a category for them but will be changing that soon.

"Of course, nothing that we do right now is similar to what they do, so what we've been doing for the last several months is developing legislation which would bring them into compliance," Fields said.

Coming into compliance could mean they'll have similar rules as taxi cabs.

Metro Council member Anthony Davis is drafting legislation that would require each tavern to apply for a permit and pass regular inspections. Drivers would undergo background checks and the companies would have to carry insurance.

Nashville Pedal Tavern owner Brian Gleason said he already does some of these things. He said he actually asked the city for regulations so that his new company could be protected.

"Safety has always been the number one priority to us. We've never had any issues. We had over 23,000 riders this last year alone and never had any injuries or claims," Gleason said.

Davis said they also may be putting a cap on how many taverns can be in the city and where they can pick up passengers.

The legislation could be up for a council vote in the next few weeks.
