State sued for allegedly denying Medicaid benefits

Posted: Updated:

Tennessee is facing a federal lawsuit over allegations that it had illegally denied Medicaid benefits.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, the Tennessee Justice Center and the National Health Law Program are representing the plaintiffs.

According to the lawsuit, the state forces people to apply for TennCare through the federal health insurance marketplace website even though it wasn't built to handle every type of TennCare available.

The state has also discontinued accepting TennCare applications in person.

The suit also alleges that Medicaid applications are not being processed in the required 45-day window.

The plaintiffs are asking a judge to give the suit class-action status.
