Investigators still searching for answers in fatal rest stop shooting

HENDERSONVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

James Roames, 39, lived in a quiet Hendersonville neighborhood with his parents for the past several years.

When Channel 4 knocked on their door on Thursday afternoon, no one answered.

"We've been here nine years, and I've only seen the kid, or the young adult, maybe twice. They were very secluded, very hermit like," said neighbor Gene Rhodes.

Investigators say they're interviewing Roames' family members to try to figure out what went wrong.

On Tuesday night, police say Roames was sitting at a Kentucky rest stop picnic table when a man pulled into the parking spot directly in front of him.

They say Roames approached the car and told the driver, Jamie Plymel, to turn off his headlights. When Plymel didn't comply, Roames shot and killed him and then turned the gun on himself.

For now, the motive remains unknown.

According to records, Roames had no bankruptcy, no property and no corporate affiliations. He's never been convicted of a crime.

Roames had a few minor debts, but the last one was in 2009 and totaled a little more than $3,000.

He did have a concealed carry permit.

There is one thing that stood out to neighbors.

"I've heard that he was a little unstable, a little mentally challenged," Rhodes said.

According to investigators, the murder-suicide was completely random and could have happened anywhere at any time.

It has those closer to home thinking a little differently.

"Sure it does, I'm one that wants to get to know who's next door to me and who's across the street from me, and I'm not gonna not reach out to people. I want to find out who it is and who they are," Rhodes said.

Investigators say this is a good reminder to try to get away if you're approached by a stranger who seems aggressive. But, in this case, they say there probably wasn't much that could have been done to prevent the shooting.
