TN woman accused of stealing from employees' paychecks

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A businesswoman is facing several charges after being accused of stealing from her own employees.

Investigators say Sally Dawson skimmed tens of thousands of dollars, maybe more, from subcontractors doing work for her, and at least two of them may have been related to her.

"This woman who lives in Charlotte, who ran this company based in Clarksville, had basically taken 10 percent of nine subcontractors' paychecks routinely over a period of time, kept the money for herself, but told the employees they were going to be getting insurance coverage," said TBI spokesperson Josh DeVine.

Investigators say this is a big problem all over the state and thousands of hard-working Tennesseans may be getting scammed right now.

"It's a huge issue if you have a broken leg or something and can't work and aren't having any medical benefits to cover it," said Director of Compliance Scott Yarbrough.

The bottom line is that even though officials are cracking down on these scammers, you need to look out for yourself, too.

"If you have an injury when you don't have a policy of insurance through your employer, you have medical bills that are almost insurmountable in almost every situation. Your paycheck is gone because you can't work and you also don't have your temporary disability benefits that the workers' compensation policy usually provides, so you can go into a financial tailspin," Yarbrough said.

For now, Dawson could wind up spending time in prison while the people who helped make her successful try to get back the 10 percent of the wages she's accused of stealing.

Dawson is charged with five counts of theft over $10,000 and four counts of theft over $1,000. She turned herself into the Montgomery County Jail on Wednesday, where she was later released after posting a $5,000 bond.
