Hendersonville police Chief Mickey Miller and DA Ray Whitley announce charges in a 1985 kidnapping and rape case.
HENDERSONVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Hendersonville police announced they have solved a kidnapping and rape case from 1985.
Police said they were charging Lane Walter Edwards for kidnapping and aggravated rape in connection with the 1985 case involving a 12-year-old girl after re-testing of DNA evidence.
If convicted, Edwards could face between 20 years and life in prison on the charges.
Edwards is currently in state custody serving a life sentence for first-degree murder for the Sept. 21, 2011, beating death of Robert Johnson at a homeless camp under the Jefferson Street Bridge. He is also serving a 10-year sentence for attempted rape of a then 23-year-old Mt. Juliet woman as she walked from downtown to the East Nashville home where she was house-sitting.
The cold case is the second Hendersonville police have solved in the last year.
The police department announced last August the arrest of Charles Scott Settle in connection with the 1987 rape of an 8-year-old girl. Settle was 19 at the time of the crime.
DNA evidence also played a large role in that arrest, according to authorities.
