Tucson American Little League is known for their ability to hit home runs. They did just that Wednesday night to stay alive in the race for the District 12 Championship.
Santiago Ochoa homered twice. Isaiah Arellano and Frank Basurto also added jacks, Arellano a three-run shot as American eliminated Copper Hills 13-7.
American will face Sunnyside in the Elimination Final on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. at Freedom Park. Sunnyside lost to Randolph 9-5.
The winner of the American-Sunnyside game will play Randolph Friday night for the District 12 Championship. If Randolph wins that game they will advance to the Arizona State Tournament. If Randolph loses, a winner take all game will be played on Saturday night to decide who advances.
American's lone lose came at the hands of Randolph 9-5.
In Intermediate Little League action this week, Tanque Verde beat Sierra Vista 11-1 to advance to the 13-team West Regional to be played at Fleischer Park in Nogales July 17-26. Nogales, the Intermediate District 8 Champions and host team, also will play in the event.
The Intermediate Division began as a two-year pilot program, before becoming an official division in 2012. Players ages 11-13 are eligible to play Intermediate, which features a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot bases, also known as “50/70”.
