NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -
A suspect in Sunday's mass shooting on Bourbon Street is now in custody, police say. Trung T. Le, 20, was arrested in Gulfport, Mississippi.
Le was apprehended by the New Orleans Police Department's Violent Offender Warrant Squad and the U.S. Marshals. Sheriffs say that Le was arrested on Ol Oaks Drive in Gulfport, a residential neighborhood.
Le was arrested on Friday a short time after he was named a suspect. Trung Le, also known as Joe, is an Asian male from Belle Chasse, Louisiana.
During Sunday's shooting on Bourbon Street, police believe at least two suspects exchanged gunfire, wounding bystanders in the crowd, before fleeing the scene. Police believe Le fired the first shot.
Police are actively searching for a second suspect.
"The video that is out there gives a good start," said NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas. "We believe he fled heading towards Esplanade, from the corner of Orleans and Bourbon. We think he may have turned towards Rampart Street. So, again, we're calling on anyone who might have had a cell phone, anyone who might have video on their home as far away as Rampart Street or St. Claude."
Early Friday morning, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Le for one count of first degree murder in the death of Brittany Thomas, and nine counts of attempted first degree murder. Serpas announced that Le was in custody during a press conference late Friday afternoon.
"Our Eighth District and Homicide Detectives have worked around the clock since this shooting incident took place and I am confident we will bring all of the perpetrators in this case to justice," said Serpas. "I am thankful to local, state and regional law enforcement agencies that have assisted the NOPD and to the community for the numerous Crime Stoppers tips we have received."
Ten people were shot around 2:45 a.m. in the 700 block of Bourbon Street on Sunday. One of the ten victims, 21-year-old Brittany Thomas, was pronounced dead on Wednesday. Thomas was from Hammond, Louisiana.
As of Thursday evening, one victim remained hospitalized. Seven victims have been treated and released while one refused any treatment.
Officials say tips have helped move the investigation forward.
"One of the reasons why we've been able to do this is because we have had help. We have had help from the community, calling in talking to us, following up leads, making sure that we make identifications," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu.
Detectives are requesting for the public's assistance in obtaining any photos or videos taken of the incident or any photos or videos taken from the French Quarter on the night of the incident to be sent to NOPDTIPS@nola.gov or Crime Stoppers at (504) 822-1111.
