With the summer heat comes pest invasions. This year, pest control companies are seeing a rise in scorpions, in some cases as many as 300 in a single home.
One Valley family's infestation is so bad, they're moving out of their home.
"I thought it just might be a localized problem, but it's all over the Valley," said Ashley Callihan.
Callihan has lived in her Henderson home with her family for a year. She said it's been a nightmare.
"When we moved in, about a few days after, we noticed two scorpions inside," she said.
Callihan said she and her husband find six scorpions inside their home every two weeks.
The Callihans have adjusted. They always wear shoes inside the house, the children don't play with toys outside of it. They spent a lot of nights with other family members.
They've tried everything from pest control companies to nightly hunts with black lights to solve the problem.
"We actually have a really long black light, and then we take that spray that kills them on contact. Me and my husband are a team. And I take the black light, and he takes the spray and we kill them," Callihan said.
The Callihans find up to six scorpions in their yard each night.
"They are all in the rocks, on the patio, on the house," Callihan said.
"The Arizona bark scorpion is the most venomous in the United States, and that's what we have here," said Grady Jones, an entomologist with Western Extermination Company.
Jones said his company is receiving up to 200 calls a week, many of them about scorpions. He said most of the scorpions are arriving in the Valley via landscaping materials from Arizona.
"All the landscaping – primarily trees, rocks and other types of landscaping – [scorpions] come in from there," he said.
Jones said scorpions will get into the cracks and crevices of your home, and they're tough to get rid of.
"It has an exoskeleton. It's very thick. They're hardy. They have a number of traits that make them difficult to kill," he said.
Exterminators will try to deal with the problem by spraying pesticides in and around your home. One of the most effective measures is pesticide dust, which is sprayed into the holes on the bottom of a house.
"That's what they get up in, and they'll follow that up into the attic and other areas and come into the house, so that needs to be treated and that needs to be injected with dust," Jones said.
Jones said there isn't a quick fix when it comes to scorpions. The effort could take months. Jones further said that finding three or more scorpions in and around your home in a month signals a problem, and you should seek professional help at that point.
