Blacksburg (WSLS) -- We've learned the man who died in a drowning incident in Blacksburg Wednesday evening was a former member of the Virginia Tech wrestling team.

21-year-old Darren Hankins drowned while swimming at what used to be a rock quarry near Lusters Gate Road around 6:30 p.m., according to Virginia Tech.

Bystanders tried to save him but were unable to do so.

Officials with The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office recovered his body around 7:30 p.m.

Hankins was a junior philosophy major who competed on the varsity squad for two seasons, but sat out the 2013-2014 season due to an injury.
