A west Nashville neighborhood proved itself Wednesday when a woman rushed to a burning home to save the two people inside.
Luckily everyone got out of the Eatons Creek Road home safely, but the house that's been a neighbor's home for decades is a complete loss.
Firefighters said two women were inside at the time of the fire. Both were taken to the hospital.
One of the women suffered burns while the other had chest pains.
Cecilia Stanford, the neighbor across the street, helped get them out alive.
"I've known Ms. Lowe since I was a little girl and got her out of the house and brought both of them to my house and called 911," said Stanford.
Stanford noticed smoke coming from her neighbor's house and rushed over to help.
Lowe and her caregiver were home when the fire started.
"We heard a loud boom and tried to move them quickly," said Stanford. "She said the dryer blew up. She was consumed with smoke, so she really couldn't talk a lot."
By the time firefighters arrived, flames had taken hold.
"It was a working house fire. It wasn't one room. It was hard work and a strenuous amount of heat," said Terry Secrest, a Nashville Fire Department district chief.
Firefighters estimate temperatures inside the home at more than 800 degrees, an already tough battle made worse by the heat of the day.
"Put on this tank, helmet, coat, you weigh almost 80 pounds," said Secrest. "If you look at them over there laying on the ground pouring water in them, we're trying to keep them hydrated."
It was a fight against a ruthless fire that had no mercy with Lowe's home and her way of life.
The fire marshal did come out to look into what cause this tragic fire, and the Red Cross was called to provide assistance.
Fire officials remind everyone to have working smoke detectors in your home. If you're in Nashville, the Nashville Fire Department has them for free and, if needed, will come to your home and install them. If you live outside Nashville, check with your local fire department for availability.
