Brass stolen from vet graves in Wauseon

WAUSEON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of about 100 brass rods that hold medallions and flags from veterans' graves in Wauseon.

"I am very unhappy about it," said Mary Oyer, a Wauseon resident. "I am just very discouraged and disappointed in people thinking that they have to do something like this, to desecrate a person's grave."

Superintendent of the Wauseon Union Cemetery, Scott Stiriz, says he and his workers noticed the rods had been stolen when he was mowing the grounds.

"It is real frustrating because, you know, you see people in here all the time and you can't watch everybody," Stiriz said. "You just assume that they're watering flowers or taking care of loved ones."

The missing rods were replaced Monday morning. According to a preliminary report by the sheriff's office, the thieves made off with $350 in brass – and not for the first time.

"It happened about a year and a half ago, and they actually took the whole thing and they cut them up," Stiriz said.

Arrests were made in that case, but Stiriz says he is thinking of installing security cameras.

Anyone with information on the current case is asked to call the Fulton County Sheriff's Office at 419-335-4010.
