Woman gets lottery scam call

Posted: Updated:

A woman said she nearly fell victim to a scam about the Tennessee Lottery.

Nancy Snabely said she had gotten a phone call saying she had won $5,000 in a scratch-off game with the Tennessee Lottery.

She said she buys scratch offs from time to time so she figured it could be legit.

Snabely said the man was convincing at first, but then she noticed some giant red flags.

"They said they were from the Tennessee Lottery headquarters and they wanted to know if I played scratch off tickets," said Snabely. "I told them yes and he said ‘That's great. You won.' and I couldn't figure out what I won."

The man, who Snabely said had an accent, said he was going to send her a packet of information and she'd get it in the mail.

He said she'd have to go get a money gram and that's when she started laughing, realized what was going on and told the man she thought this was all a scam.

She said the man cursed at her and hung up.

The Tennessee Lottery said you should be wary of anyone who requests money before you receive your prize and never reveal any personal information to anyone who initiates contact with you.

As the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
