Providence Road to close through weekend for sewage project, road repaving

A traffic nightmare could be brewing in south Charlotte Friday afternoon.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg utility crews will be closing Providence Road near McAlpine Creek to repave the road after installing a 54-inch diameter sewer pipe.

All lanes will close starting around 9 a.m.

Traffic will be detoured onto Old Providence and Sardis Roads over the weekend.

Crews will work around the clock while the road is closed.

One lane will be reopened in each direction as crews complete their work.

The city the upgraded sewer project is needed as the area has seen a boom in population growth and to protect the water quality in McAlpine Creek.

Providence Road is expected to fully reopen on Monday morning.
