MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

Firefighters from Mesa and Tempe battled a fire at a Pentecostal church in Mesa on Thursday morning.

The fire broke out just before 9 a.m. at the New Life Assembly of God Church at 315 W. University Dr., said Capt. Forrest Smith of the Mesa Fire Department.

A worker noticed smoke coming from a vent and the pastor called 911.

Smith said the damage was contained to the east portion of the church, but that smoke damage would be evident throughout.

"As we were working through trying to get the source of the fire, the fire did start to vent itself, then we had a great deal of flames coming through the roof," Smith said.

Smith said firefighters are still determining whether the cause of the fire had to do with air conditioning.

Patty Watts, who has worked at the church for 25 years, said the church was undergoing a slow remodeling. She said the church has insurance and while the fire is a sad event, the congregation's faith would carry it through.

"I know we will recover. We will be fine in the long run, it's just hard to see this happen. We can't say, 'why us,'" Watts said.

The church was a former Mormon church but has been the New Life Assembly of God since 1985.

No injuries were reported.
