Pair charged after leaving a pregnant woman to die alone

Posted: Updated:
Haley Stanley, 24, of Dalton, had her entire life ahead of her. She was starting a new chapter, as a woman of faith and a new mom.

"She was about to find out the sex of her baby. She was very, very excited, like absolutely obsessed with her pregnancy. She was so happy to be a mother," says friend Brittney Bartczak.

Bartczak was Stanley's best friend growing up. They last talked one week before authorities found her dead inside her car parked in a vacant lot in Calhoun, GA. Stanley was 19 weeks pregnant. "That's what was so shocking about it all, we didn't know why she was in Calhoun," Bartczak says.

Chief Garry Moss tells Channel 3 a resident became suspicious when they noticed Stanley's car parked overnight. When officers arrived around 10 a.m. that morning, they found her dead in the front seat. The investigation led them to two individuals at a nearby apartment complex, David Bastin and Francis Leming, who officers say was with Stanley the day before she died.

"{Bastin} and the Leming lady that we're looking for had carried her out to her car and he had drove her to that parking lot and left her and walked back to his apartment which was only two blocks away," Moss says.

Both suspects have been charged, each with one count each of involuntary manslaughter and one count of reckless conduct.

Police believe drugs were involved.

"This Miss Leming told Mr. Bastin, 'take her and park her car away from our house and call 911,'" explains Moss.
However, Moss says that call was never made leaving Stanley to die alone.

Those closest to her say she battled addiction but was elated to be a new mom and was turning a new leaf. They will remember the girl from their childhood.
"She was very athletic, she could sing, oh my Lord her voice was amazing," Bartczak says.

Bastin is in custody at the Gordon County Jail. Authorities are still searching for Leming, they believe she is in the Dalton, GA area. If you have any information about Leming's whereabouts, contact the Calhoun Police Department.
