GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

Investigators say a Valley off-duty officer had some kind of medical episode that led him to crash his SUV into a Gilbert church on Wednesday morning.

Police said the off-duty Gilbert officer was driving with his children, ages 4, 5 and 7, in the SUV when it slammed through Tabernacle Victory Church at Mesquite and Lindsey.

Two people rushed over and got the children and the man out of the car, Sgt. Jesse Sanger said.

The man was treated at an area hospital and is recovering at home, Sanger said. The kids were not hurt.

Police have not released the name of the off-duty officer but added he's 29 years old and a six-year veteran of the Gilbert police force.
