SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Travelers driving on the Massachusetts Turnpike in the Springfield area will no longer be forced to pay a toll starting in the summer of 2016, according to Sara Lavoie, deputy communications director for MassDOT.

Beyond that, the Mass. Pike will be completely transitioned to All Electronic Tolling (AET) within that same timeframe.

With AET on the Pike, there will no longer be a ticket barrier system at exits. Drivers will be tolled for the segments of the Pike that they traveled. (See image for the Mass Pike AET layout).

When a two-axle passenger vehicle travels under a toll checkpoint, or gantry, the current proposal plans for a 40 cent toll. At least ten gantry locations are currently planned for each side of the Pike. Drivers without EZ Pass will receive their toll in the mail.

The current proposal will remove tolls in the Springfield area, between exits 4 and 7, and in the Worcester area, between exits 10 and 11.

"The decision will benefit residents of these areas by allowing them to move freely through their cities to access employment, education and healthcare opportunities," said Lavoie.

The cost of removing toll booths and installing AET will cost $130 million, a bid that Raytheon won as they submitted the lowest price for the job with the highest technical score.
