Hundreds attend funeral held for Ray Boone

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds came together at the New Deliverance Evangelistic Church to celebrate the life of Ray Boone and say their final farewells while also making plans to continue his legacy.

"We will miss him, that's for sure."

It was a sentiment echoed both outside and inside of a service honoring Ray Boone, the mood light, and at times the room filled with laughter, as those who knew Boone best spoke about him.

Dignitaries, such as Mayor Dwight Jones, Senator Tim Kaine and more, joined family and friends in saying goodbye to Boone, who died at the age of 76. Boone is considered a journalism icon as the founder and editor of the Richmond Free Press.

"He was a pioneer, the fight continues and we should continue to support the Richmond Free Press," said Dolson Anderson.

"The legacy he left behind, he was just a great individual," said Jesse Moore.

Boone is survived by his wife and two children. He was also loved by a host of employees who say he was a tough boss but fair and always expected the best.
