Singer Mel Tillis hits stage after heart surgery

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Country music star Mel Tillis performed Saturday for the first time since open heart surgery.

Tillis described the March operation as a quadruple bypass, and showed fans the scar on his chest during the Midnite Jamboree at Nashville's Texas Troubadour Theatre.

The crowd erupted with laughter when Tillis joked that doctors used an all-purpose adhesive to seal the wound.

"They didn't sew it up, they glued it up," he said.  "They have Gorilla Glue and they glued it up."

His performance was a family affair.  Tillis was joined on stage by his daughter Pam and son, Mel Jr.

He says comedy played a big role in his recovery.

"It's something that I just love to do," Tillis explained.  "That's what I think I was put on this old earth to do. Make people laugh."

Tillis is scheduled to launch a new tour June 14.
