NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Fisk Jubilee Singers are remembering a longtime leader. Matthew Kennedy died Thursday of complications from cancer. He was 93 years old.

Kennedy began playing piano as a young child in the segregated South.

He won a scholarship to Julliard, and his talents led him to the Apollo, Carnegie Hall and many other stages around the world.

Kennedy began working as a music instructor at Fisk University in 1947 and took over as leader of the Jubilee Singers in 1957 - a post he held until his retirement in 1986.
