South Carolina infielder Joey Pankake was selected Friday afternoon in the seventh round of the MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers.
The right-handed junior from Easley was named to the SEC All-Defensive Team and was the 26th player in USC history to reach 200 career hits. Pankake finished the season batting .303 and scoring 52 runs for the Gamecocks. In three years for South Carolina, Pankake batted .292 with 18 home runs, 35 doubles, and 100 RBI.
Pankake becomes the third Gamecock off the board joining Grayson Greiner, who was also drafted by the Tigers, and Jordan Montgomery (New York Yankees).
