Bulger's Beat: Nashville couple celebrates 70 years of marriage

Posted: Updated:

One Nashville couple could write the book on living the married life. They just celebrated 70 years of wedded bliss.

For Joe and Lorine Connell, it all started in the sandwich section at a Nashville grocery store in 1942.

"I worked in the cheese counter. He worked in produce," Lorine Connell said.

But they admit it was hardly love at first bite.

"He was sort of shy. I had to make the first go. He was from the country and didn't know much about the city," Lorine Connell said.

The Dickson County boy stepped up two years later, and 1944 marked the official start of their life together, including time while Joe Connell served in the Army during World War II.

Four children led to grandchildren and then great-grandchildren.

Now, congratulatory cards on those 70 years decorate their Nashville home.

Joe Connell is 91 now and still not ready to give up grass-cutting duty, while his bride is more popular with marriage advice than Dr. Phil.

"You can't go to bed mad. You've got to make up," she said.

It's worked for them since 1944.

Lorine Connell likes to joke that she was kind of in charge of getting things together back in 1942, but she's also quick to point out that her husband is fully in charge of things today.
