Summer travelers greeted by road construction

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Those single-digit temperatures that brought on the winter blues may cause a spike in summer travel.

AAA estimates more families will hit the road for summer vacation this year, just in time for TDOT's busy construction season.

One look at the Tennessee Department of Transportation's website can be overwhelming with all the road barrels designating construction projects.

"Construction is a year-round business, so yes, we will be out there working," said TDOT spokesperson Heather Jensen.

Crews will be out day and night during the summer travel season. Before you head out on vacation, there are at least a handful of spots you should know about.

"North of town, we all know the biggest construction project up there is I-65 North at Trinity Lane," said Jensen.

In west Nashville, ramps will be blocked on the weekends for bridge work at Interstate 40 and Jefferson Street. Overnight paving on I-40 near Highway 109 might slow trips to and from East Tennessee through July.

Then there is construction on I-65 south of Franklin near Peytonsville Road.

"We are doing some blasting out there. Usually it happens at a certain time of day, noon or 1 p.m., again to impact as little traffic as possible," said Jensen.

Unfortunately I-65 is the route Jeff Alldredge plans to take to the beach.

"I've got five kids that range in ages from 2 to 16," said Alldredge. "It is not a situation where it's at a standpoint of running late, but stressful from a standpoint of wanting to get out of the car."

TDOT officials said there is no need for drivers to stress.

"Our biggest benefits are the message boards, not only before the construction, but in the construction site," said Jensen. "Just to show this is what is happening and to be aware of it."

All of the construction sites are available on WSMV.com.

As you plan your summer road trip, be sure to slow down in the construction zones. The speed limit is usually 10 mph slower than the regular posted speed limit.

One project not on the list yet is lane closures on I-65 north of Nashville in the Rivergate area. Crews will soon begin weekend lane closures there.

Next summer a large bridge project will shut down stretches of I-40 in the downtown area on weekends.
