Volunteers churn out food, fun at Second Harvest

Volunteers are special people. They aren't asking for a paycheck, and most don't even expect a pat on the back. Yet they donate their free time to help improve someone else's life.

That type of dedication and selflessness is on display every day at Second Harvest Food Bank, through the work of volunteers like Mike Berger.

He is a no-nonsense kind of guy who likes to work and likes the people around him to work, too.

Berger is the boss in the food packing section at Second Harvest twice a week for four hours a day.

"It's fun. There's a lot of action and no standing around. If it works right, everybody is busy all the time," Berger said.

When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, Berger wondered how he could help close to home. So he came to Second Harvest, signed up and hasn't stopped helping.

On this day, the group he's coordinating includes students from Christ the King Elementary, who will help pack 11,000 pounds of food and deliver it to those in need.

"The part that's nice is it gives you a sense of what you accomplished and the fact that the people are ultimately going to use it," Berger said.

And his volunteer spirit rubs off on the younger set.

Student Lola Mellencamp was efficiently running the snack side of the operation, and she knows what to expect when it comes to a paycheck.

"Nothing. It's fun though, because we get to help the community," Lola said.

Berger helps make it fun with a Pay It 4Ward spirit that pays off for everyone.

"You are the best group we've ever had," he told the students. "I say that to everybody. No, you did good, real good."

Second Harvest Food Bank is a busy place, and it always needs more volunteers.
