Bulger's Beat: Square dancing still swinging on TN dance floors

Posted: Updated:

The jitterbug and the macarena have fallen by the wayside, but the square dance is still alive and well at dance halls across Middle Tennessee.

While the fiddles and banjos have largely been replaced by modern tunes, the dancing and the workout is the same. All you've got to do now is grab a partner.

Square dancing hasn't lost a step inside the Hermitage Presbyterian Church, where Gene Aldridge calls out the instructions to the dancers.

"Do the bubble pass through. First couple left, next couple go right," Aldridge said during a recent dance.

And don't think this is your grandmother's square dancing. The music these days includes Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Mellencamp and even some Lady Gaga.

It's pure fun, and for many in the crowd, it can get the blood flowing.

At 82 years old, Harold Leach's twinkle toes keep that twinkle in his eye.

"I think dancing keeps you young," Leach said.

And Shirley Thurman has lost 80 pounds by hitting the dance floor.

"A lady doing Weight Watchers was a square dancer. She said you need to come with me, and I did. And it's saved my life," Thurman said.

There are 10 sanctioned square-dancing clubs in Middle Tennessee. For more information, visit: http://www.tnsquaredance.org.
