DURHAM, N.C. -

The National Black Farmers Association presented awards this week to two Triangle men for their part in a winning class action lawsuit.

James Scott Farrin and Eric Sanchez of The Law Offices of James Scott Farrin received the awards Thursday, according to the firm.

Several years ago, a $1.25 billion settlement with black farmers was approved by the federal government. Farmers had filed the suit saying the USDA discriminated against them, leaving them without their farms and livelihoods.

Farrin said the awards ceremony “marked an end to a long and very unfortunate chapter in our nation’s history.”

He said,“For decades, thousands of black farmers, and those who wanted to farm, were systematically discriminated against by the U.S. Department of Agriculture -- essentially barring them from their piece of the American dream. The National Black Farmers Association trusted the Law Offices of James Scott Farrin with their pursuit of justice which they finally realized. Unfortunately, many black farmers passed before that day came. Today, we remember each of them and celebrate the perseverance of all black farmers.”
