CLARKSVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Clarksville man has been arrested in connection to the death of his stepdaughter.

Police say they were called to an apartment on Fort Campbell Boulevard on Thursday night to assist a 1-year-old child who was not breathing.

Officers who responded say the child had injuries that looked suspicious.

The child, identified by police as Winter Denny, was taken to Gateway Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The girl's stepfather, 21-year-old Kyle Batiz, has been charged with criminal homicide.

According to the warrant obtained by The Leaf-Chronicle, Batiz told police he hit the child in the abdomen and performed "a modified Heimlich-type thrusting maneuver" on her.

The warrant says Batiz told police his actions may have resulted in her death.

Batiz is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail.
