City Officials, Community Leaders and Running Enthusiasts celebrate the 13.1 mile race and downtown cultural festival as a landmark community event which supports the city's revitalization efforts.
OAKLAND, Calif., May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Project Sport, LLC, an Oakland-based event production company, along with Mayor Jean Quan, City Officials, Community Leaders and nearly one hundred Running Enthusiasts unveiled the highly-anticipated route and event details for the city's first annual "The Town's Half Marathon" at a community launch event at the FOX Theater. The 13.1 mile race through Oakland's historic and urban neighborhoods and downtown cultural festival at City Hall will be a landmark community event in support of the city's revitalization efforts.
"We are honored and thrilled to support our city's revitalization efforts by offering Oakland's spirited community of runners a unique race and authentic downtown festival centered on all the greatest aspects this city has to offer," said Ryan Dawkins, President of Project Sport.
"We've been working closely with local City Officials and meeting with Community Leaders and Running Enthusiasts to carefully design and plan a one-of-a-kind experience that showcases the best of Oakland. Our route will take racers through iconic areas of the city before a thrilling musical finish and cultural festival on the steps of City Hall with local wineries, craft beer, artisan chefs and live music," added Dawkins.
Spanning 13.1 miles from start to finish, the route will be known as "Tour of Oakland" and will be the city's first hyper-local route experience. Iconic areas along the route include Jack London Square, Downtown, City Center, Uptown, Piedmont Ave, Temescal Alley & Telegraph Ave and Grand Ave from Pleasant Valley to Lake Merritt with a finish at Frank Ogawa Plaza.
"Our downtown has an eclectic selection of locally-owned, globally-inspired and award-winning restaurants," said Jean Quan, Mayor of Oakland, CA.
"We're very excited about The Town's Half Marathon and look forward to sharing our downtown community with our passionate running community and all of their supporters," said Mayor Quan.
The race and festival will take place on August 16, 2014 and participants who complete the course will receive an official finisher medal.
"Our interactive, spinning finisher medal contains our iconic Oak Leaf logo with a modern, inspiring design," said Dawkins.
"We specifically designed these medals to stand out from other prestigious finisher medals across the running world. We hope the Oakland community and our race participants will always associate the cutting-edge design with the city's forward-thinking, revitalization efforts," Dawkins added.
