Iroquois Steeplechase ready for another exciting year

Posted: Updated:

It's an event known for horses, hats and highballs. The Iroquois Steeplechase returns for its 73rd year this weekend, and Channel 4 News got a peek at some new surprises you'll see.

Organizers drew post positions Thursday morning at Percy Warner Park for all seven of Saturday's races, and Steeplechase race chairman Dwight Hall said the main event can go down to the nose.

"The first three finishers from last year are back as well as a previous winner, Pierrot Lunaire, as well as some other very, very competitive horses. It's going to be a really exciting afternoon," Hall said.

But that's not the only exciting thing the estimated 25,000 spectators can expect.

Officials have added a few new features, including individual tailgate armbands for $100, and creature comforts like AT&T's Mega-COW - its largest portable cell tower.

"You're going to be able to get your signal and get your service, and our press people are able to get their reports out. So it makes it a whole lot easier for everybody," said Steeplechase Executive Director Libby Cheek.

"Who would have thought four years ago that we're going to be doing Twitter and Instagram and all the things - that it would be a major part?" Hall said.

If want to do the Steeplechase in style, you'll want to check out the new sky boxes, which come with air conditioning, granite countertops, a wet bar and catering.

The sky boxes also include an outdoor deck, private bathrooms and stadium seats to accommodate about 200 people.

While the sky boxes are already booked for this year, you'll have to act fast if you want to book one for 2015.

"They can expect a fun experience. It's a sporting event. It's a social event," Hall said.
