Hours announced for modern streetcar

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

The moderns streetcar in downtown Tucson will run until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday nights.

The city took a survey asking residents, businesses and students what time they thought was best.

For budgetary reasons, the city proposed a midnight shutdown time but the overwhelming number of respondents felt it was not a good idea to shut down the streetcar before last call.

"It was a discussion with the community," says project manager Shelly Ginn. "We heard what they were saying."

The hours will be presented to the Tucson city council in two weeks "but we don't expect any disagreement," says Ginn.

The issue was resolved by "juggling some hours around," she says.

The streetcar will start operating at seven in the morning instead of six.

Of course that's subject to change depending on how many riders use the streetcar and at what times.

"If after six months we decide we need to change, we will," Ginn says.

Also, the streetcar stop in front of the El Centro garage is being constructed this week.

If affects on lane of traffic at Congress and 4th but will cause slowdowns in the area.

But the good news is this is the final construction project along the 3.9 mile line.

It's been a two year process and now it's time to sit back and see if it's all worth it.

"We are looked to as an example by other streetcar cities," Ginn says. "We are contacted by other cities so we have a lot of pressure to be as successful as possible."
