NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
Two people were killed in Lincoln County on Monday night after an EF-3 tornado swept through the county.
Authorities identified the victims as John Prince, 60, and his wife Karen Prince, 44. They lived in a mobile home on Tipton Road.
Sheriff Murray Blackwelder said in a press conference that seven people had minor injuries.
Blackwelder said his department received the first call of a tornado in the Vanntown community about 5:15 p.m. He said that there were reports of damage minutes later in the Flintville community.
The tornado began near the state line and then slammed the South Lincoln Elementary School in the Lincoln community. The front of the school was torn off, about three-quarters of the
building's roof was ripped off and a school bus was tossed into the
building, which was empty at the time of the storms.
Blackwelder said they viewed the area from the air on Tuesday morning. The sheriff said the path continued to the northeast boundary of the county and the path appeared to be 2 miles wide.
Lincoln County schools will be closed again on Wednesday because of power outages.
Blackwelder said 25 structures were destroyed and several others were damaged.
WAFF-TV reported at least six people were killed after a tornado moved through Limestone County, AL, on Monday.
Nashville set a new daily rainfall record for April 28 with more than 2" recorded at Nashville International Airport, surpassing the previous record of 1.74" set in 1945. However, many nearby locations collected 4" or more in unofficial readings.
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency declared a state of emergency as of noon Monday.
Other flooding was reported Monday in Hohenwald, where people had to be evacuated from their homes, particularly between 48 South and U.S. 412 West on Wildcat Hollow Road.
At least two homes were damaged by small fires apparently sparked by lightning strikes Monday morning. One was reported in the 1000 block of Witherspoon Road in Maury County, and the other was in the 1800 block of County Hospital Road in Nashville. No injuries were reported in either fire.
Multiple homes and structures were damaged by a severe storm Monday afternoon in the Eastland community in White County. Two homes had roof damage, and a garage and travel trailer were damaged. Trees and power lines were down along Eastland Road.
Anne McCloy, Kara Apel and Kevin Young contributed to this report.
