TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -
Safety posts began to be added Friday on St. Mary's Road from I-10 to Main Avenue Friday as part of an attempt to protect bicyclists on the road.
Crews from the Streets and Traffic Maintenance Division of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation began installing plastic posts along the bike lane, making a clearer separation between car lanes and bike lanes. It is the pilot project for Downtown Links Phase II.
This first installation will include 48 posts, placed 30 to 40 feet apart on either side of St. Mary's Road.
"The delineators create protected bike lanes and help bicyclists feel safer while traveling on City streets," said Anna Chanecka, Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for TDOT.
If this first instillation is effective, TDOT will expand to protect similar bike lanes in the city. The bike lane protectors are the last part of the $7.3 million project that began in November of 2012.
The bike lane posts are expected to be completed on Wednesday.
