NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A man was badly burned in a fire at his home in south Nashville.

The fire broke out early Friday morning on Citrus Drive near Paragon Mills Road.

It took firefighters some time to find the 72-year-old man because the house was so smoky.

Fire officials said they also had a hard time getting inside the house.

"The first problem was when they got here, the house was locked up securely. They had to make forcible entry. And then from that point on, they had to deal with, of course, the heat and heavy smoke conditions," said Nashville Assistant Fire Chief Walter Demonbreun.

The man was taken to the hospital with severe burns to his upper body.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
