Police are working to find the person responsible for shooting four people, including a 4-year-old, on Thursday night in the Edgehill area of Nashville.
The child is now recovering, and his mother is speaking out about how the trouble started.
Officers who happened to be in the Edgehill area rushed over to the 1300 block of 14th Avenue South when they heard gunshots around 9 p.m.
Mary Simmons, the 4-year-old's mother, says her boyfriend asked a group of men who were standing outside to leave when one of them pulled out a gun and started shooting.
One of the bullets ricocheted, hitting the boy in the foot.
"I didn't know he was hit until I looked at his foot," she said. "So, yeah, it was kind of scary."
Simmons witnessed the shooting outside her home.
"It started ricocheting. It started coming off the ground, and that's when my son got hit," she said.
Simmons says her son should fully recover. Remarkably, she says doctors told her the foot will heal in a matter of weeks.
Her boyfriend, the boy's father, is still at the hospital.
None of the other victims' injuries are said to be life threatening.
Police say the suspect, a black male wearing all-black clothing, fled on foot. Further information on him has not been released.
"It was heartbreaking," Simmons said. "I still tear up just to hear it. It hits so close to home."
This was one of three shootings that happened in Nashville on Thursday night. One person was shot on 11th Avenue South and another person was shot on Herman Street. Both of those victims have non-life-threatening injuries.
