SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) -
The woman suspected of striking and killing a teenager changing a flat tire on Interstate 24 has had additional charges filed against her on Friday morning.
Tina L. Wilson, 33, was arrested at her Murfreesboro home on Friday morning on charges of vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault in connection with the I-24 hit-and-run wreck on Thursday afternoon that killed 13-year-old Clifton Braunwalder and injured his mother.
Authorities said Wilson was traveling westbound on I-24 at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero she was driving. The Tennessee Highway Patrol report said Wilson went off the roadway to the right and struck Clifton Braunwalder, who was changing the tire on the Chevrolet Cavalier under the Sam Ridley Parkway overpass in Smyrna, struck the vehicle and then hit Sondra S. Braunwalder, 47, Clifton's mom, before fleeing the scene.
Sondra Braunwalder's 12-year-old daughter Louann was also standing outside at the back of the car, but was not struck.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to her. She witnessed this. Their mother witnessed this. They lost a family member due to a driver not exercising full control," said THP Sgt. Bill Miller.
A good Samaritan followed Wilson and contacted police.
Authorities arrested Wilson in Davidson County and initially charged her with leaving the scene of a fatal crash. She was booked into the Rutherford County jail and was released early Friday morning on bond before she was arrested again Friday around 7 a.m.
A vigil was organized at his church, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Murfreesboro, Thursday night to remember Clifton Braunwalder.
"His family was a home school family, yet they were very involved in the parish here - Knights of Columbus, Heart of Mary, Boy Scouts – you name it, the Braunwalders did it," said Julie Manke, a family friend.
Boy Scouts of America issued the following statement about Clifton Braunwalder:
"The Middle Tennessee Council, Boy Scouts of America is saddened about the sudden passing of Clifton Braunwalder. Clifton had been involved in scouting for over five years where he acquired many of the life skills he used to help his family yesterday. The Scouting community has the Braunwalder family in our thoughts and prayers."
The Braunwalders were driving from their Lascassas home to Nashville to hear a speaker.
"They were such a renaissance family, very talented in a lot of ways," said Manke. "The whole parish is devastated."
In lieu of flowers, the Braunwalder family asks that donations be made to:
Middle Tennessee Council of the Boy Scouts of America Summer Camp Campership program
St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Youth Group
MTSU Catholic Student Center via St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church
Nashville Rescue Mission
People can also donate at the church office to help with funeral arrangements by calling 615-893-1843.
