UAW subpoenas Haslam, Corker to testify on VW vote

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - The United Auto Workers has issued subpoenas to U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, Gov. Bill Haslam and 18 other Tennessee officials to appear at a National Labor Relations Board hearing on a challenge of the outcome of a union vote at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that others subpoenaed by the union include Economic Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty, House Majority Leader Gerald McCormick, state Sen. Bo Watson and House Speaker Beth Harwell.

Workers at the plant in February voted 712-626 against UAW representation in February following a brief but acrimonious campaign. The union is challenging the result on allegations that Republican politicians interfered with a fair outcome.

Corker's chief of staff, Todd Womack, said the union is "trying to create a sideshow."
