Children found playing with loaded gun on Fremont school playground

FREMONT, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Fremont Police are working to try and figure out how a gun made it on to a playground there.

A man who lives across the street from Stamm Elementary says he was sitting on his porch Sunday evening when a child came running over.

"Kid came running up to me saying ‘call the police call the police the other kid has got a gun," said the man, who did not want to be identified. "They're over there with toy guns all the time but the look on his face - something was different. I really don't know it was, just get it away from the kids and have the police come get it."

The man says he called the other child over and took the gun out of his hand. He says the situation could have been a lot worse, as the gun was loaded.

"He was so small he couldn't slide the slide all the way back there and the bullet got jammed in there and they were still pointing it and acting like they were shooting," said the man who took the gun.

The man says someone else went inside and called 911. Fremont Police quickly arrived.

Fremont Police declined an interview for this story, but did say they are investigating which child brought the gun to the playground and where he got it.

Some parents say even though the incident happened on a Sunday, the school should have notified parents.

"They should've informed the parents, let them know what's going on at the school because as you can see there's kids here all the time," said Fremont parent Andrea Thurston.

Police say their investigation could lead to child endangering or weapon under disability charges.
