CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Chattanooga Police are warning the public about a bad drug circulating in Chattanooga.
Investigators believe a drug being handed out and presented as "ecstasy" could be to blame for three weekend overdoses. One of them was fatal.
The two recovering are 20-year-old Antonio Espey and 24-year-old Roger Bell. 20-year-old Robert Allen was pronounced dead.
Investigators are awaiting autopsy and toxicology results to know for sure, but suspect the same batch of drugs from the same party is to blame. They want the public to take their warning seriously.
"Everybody be made aware this could possibly be a fatal drug," Chattanooga Police Officer Tim McFarland said.
Chattanooga Police say two men showed up at Parkridge Hospital Saturday night with symptoms of a drug overdose. They're now in stable condition, but a third victim arrived Sunday morning dead.
Investigators suspect a connection to a party Saturday night, where they say Ecstasy was being handed out. It was described as looking like a cloudy crystal.
"Drugs can come in a lot of forms. It could've been laced with something we're not sure just yet," Officer McFarland said.
They're warning everyone to be on the lookout, saying Ecstasy is a popular drug among teens and young adults at local parties.
"A lot of times especially at a social setting or party people think I'm doing something here because I'm just doing it with everybody else and it's not going to change my life," Teen Challenge of the Mid-South Evangelism Team Coordinator Jessie Hansen said.
Jessie Hansen helps people age 18 and over who are struggling with drug addiction at Teen Challenge in Chattanooga. She's not surprised to hear about the dangerous drug being passed around, but is saddened that it may have claimed a life.
"It's terrible. It just breaks our hearts," she said.
She points to research that shows every one in four deaths in the U.S. are linked to addiction. Police say this weekend's cases resulted in very sudden overdose symptoms.
"These drugs are chemicals so they're not designed to go inside your body so they're eating away at the inside of your body," Hansen said.
She prays people will heed the police warning and consider the dangerous realties before taking anything.
"It may just be a fun thing now but keep in mind what are the dreams that you have? What do you want to go towards? Because that drug is not going to help you," Hansen said.
Chattanooga Police are not releasing the location of this weekend's party or any suspect description. But again, say whoever is dealing it says it's Ecstasy and it looks like a cloudy or smokey color crystal.
