North Adams dealing with communications failure

NORTH ADAMS, (WSHM) -

The city is dealt with a massive communications failure on Sunday, as overnight rain and wind caused a radio tower to collapse.

That resulted in the loss of cell phone and internet service for nearly all of the city.

State police said there is no evidence of criminal activity at the site of the collapse.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said state and local authorities are working on short term and long term plans, which calls for the radio tower to be re-built.

Some radio service was back up and running by the afternoon and emergency services were back up by the evening.

MEMA said residents should use land-line telephones while officials work on fixing the problem.

This past week, North Adams Regional Hospital closed its doors.

In an email, the Massachusetts Nurses Associations questioned why the same emergency actions were not taken to keep the hospital open.

They said the hospital would have been "the place people could quickly turn to in a medical emergency during a time like this."
