Columbia man charged with murder of 8-month-old

A Columbia man has been charged with the first-degree murder of an 8-month-old child. Police said Michael Bonee is responsible for the severe head trauma suffered by his girlfriend's infant daughter, Sandra Ann Cates.

"It felt like there was a hole in my heart that I couldn't get to close up," said the child's great aunt Betty Martin. "It was just unthinkable that somebody could do something like that to a baby."

Last week, police were called out to a Theta Pike home where mother Miranda Collins told them Sandra Ann was unresponsive. The child later passed away at Vanderbilt after being found to have suffered a severe head injury.

"Miranda didn't know either until she got to the hospital that something else had happened besides her being sick," said Martin. "I just can't imagine how that could've happened or what the baby went through or what the mother felt like when she found out what did happen."

Katrina Brooks said she feels a need to rebuild a bond with her cousin, Collins.

"We were close as kids but when we became adults, we just all went our separate ways," said Brooks.

She and Martin said Collins will struggle to pay for the funeral cost of her child, and they're ready to help be pillars of strength.

"I love you, and I'm sorry," said Brooks. "I am there for you."

Martin added that Sandra Ann's organs will be donated. She said it was important to Collins her child's organs help other babies.

You can make donations to the family at Heritage Funeral Home in Columbia.

Police said Bonee was previously arrested in 2011 for misdemeanor child abuse in a case involving his seven-year-old son.
