Thief pepper sprays Pro Bike Tucson owner, steals $4K bike

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

It's been three weeks since an unidentified man walked up to a high-end bicycle shop on the city's east side and rode away with a $4000 bike.

At first the man appeared to be a customer at Pro Bike Tucson, located at 6540 East Tanque Verde.   But after he pepper-sprayed one of the store's owners and rode off with a bicycle, his intentions were crystal clear.

"This definitely appeared to be pre-meditated," says Tucson Police officer Brandon Tatum.   "he knew what he wanted to do...and he did it."

It happened after the man asked to take one of the bikes parked in front of the store on a test ride.

But this wasn't just any bicycle.  It was an Orbea, a Spanish brand, carbon fiber model worth about $4,000, says Chris Gould, co-owner of Pro Bike Tucson.

The store's other owner agreed to this as long as he could go on that test ride with him.

It's at that time, the suspect pulled out a can of pepper spray spraying the business owner directly in the face.

"If you happen to know who he is...please come forward," Chris Gould says.  "Obviously we'd like to get him because what he did was pretty malicious -- and really not called for at all."

The suspect is described as a light-skinned Hispanic man.  He's about 5-10, at least 200 pounds.  He also has a slight Hispanic accent and was last seen wearing an all-black Arizona Diamondbacks hat and white Istanbul T-shirt.

If you have any information about the man or his whereabouts, call 911 or 88-CRIME.
