NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Greyhound bus driver is on leave as the company investigates reports that the employee fell asleep at the wheel and refused to stop for police.

Fairview police pulled the bus over Saturday night during a journey from Jackson to Nashville, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

A passenger on the bus told Channel 4 the driver fell asleep and the bus veered across lanes of Interstate 40.

People on board were able to wake the driver before the bus crashed, but the passengers said the driver refused to pull over.

Troopers said they tried to stop the vehicle for dangerous driving near Fairview, but the driver wouldn't stop and turned the bus lights on and off instead.

Fairview officers ultimately stopped the bus and a relief driver was called, troopers said.

The incident is under investigation, and the company is fully cooperating with authorities, said spokeswoman Lanesha Gipson. The driver has been placed on leave.

The bus was carrying 36 passengers who made it to Nashville with a new driver.
