Nashville FC soccer club lets fans become part owners

Posted: Updated:

A new sports team is coming to Nashville, and you can help its growth by becoming a part owner.

The Nashville FC soccer club has rather humble beginnings, starting with an idea over a drink.

"This one came over a different kind of beer - a root beer at The Pharmacy. Just having a burger and talking with some friends," said Nashville FC President Chris Jones.

Nashville FC has been in the works for a few years, and now it's coming to life.

Head coach Brian Johnson is now choosing players, and the minor league team will play other teams across the South.

The big difference from many other sports teams is that this one is a non-profit. You can purchase a membership, and, for as little as $40, you essentially own a piece of the team.

"The board doesn't get paid. This is nothing we're making a career out of. We just want it to be where an individual owner can't just get tired of writing checks and just pack up and leave one day, or leverage the city to get better tax breaks, or leverage the city to move to another location," Jones said. "We want the community to be the owner and the community to really be attached to this organization."

Nashville FC already has more than 300 members nationwide.

The cutoff for membership is May 10, which is the date of the first game.
