Power-deprived folks turn to QuikTrip for free phone charge

JONESBORO, GA (CBS46) -

It wasn't just hot coffee and gas that had people in Clayton County flocking to QuikTrip on Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro Thursday - it was the free phone charge.

A day after an ice storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of customers in the county, some stopped by the QT with dead phones in desperate need of a charge.

"My main concern is not being able to communicate with anybody," said Ramona Devore of Jonesboro.

Devore spent an hour Thursday morning leaning against the wall outside the QT, her cell phone charger plugged into the store's outlet.

"One of the cashiers came out and she said, 'So you're using this for power?' and I said 'yes, I am.' I said 'I did buy gas,'" explained Devore.

By the time Devore's phone charge reached 30 percent, Alexis Easley joined her.

The two commiserated about spending a second day without heat, hot water or lights.

"I don't know why it's taking so long to restore power," Easley said.

Easley and family members escaped their cold home with the hope of making it to her mother's house which has power.

"We're here at QuikTrip for power, for food, drink," said Easley. "It's the only thing that's open. Word of mouth. 'QuikTrip's open. QuikTrip's open.'"

A day after the storm, a convenience store offered what power companies couldn't.

"I didn't realize how important this phone was until today," said Easley as she laughed.

Thursday at 3:15 p.m., Georgia Power reported 23,100 Clayton County customers didn't have power but it couldn't give a timeframe for when electricity would be restored.
