"Treacherous," "awful," and "terrible" are just a few of the adjectives emergency crews in Western North Carolina used to describe road conditions Wednesday night, and they said they expected conditions to worsen by Thursday morning.
"We're getting an inch of snow an hour and have been for over three hours," said Greg Schuping, emergency management director for Haywood County. "We've got over 8 inches of snow in town and over a foot of snow up on the mountain. There's no asphalt to be seen in the county, and that includes Interstate 40. Everything is under snow and ice."
Emergency officials in Buncombe County said the roads there were "crunchy" with ice and extremely dangerous.
"We are urging everyone to stay indoors and not to leave their home if at all possible," a dispatcher said.
In Henderson County, officials said roads were 100 percent covered with snow, and they were seeing as much as 7 inches of accumulation in some areas.
Haywood County deputies said they had only responded to a half-dozen accidents by 9 p.m. Wednesday, but were worried the ice and snow on the roads might impact response times overnight.
Madison County officials said heavy snow accumulation was on the primary and secondary roads there Wednesday night. Officials said they had responded to a number of incidents where cars lost control on the roads and got stuck in the snow.
Polk, Rutherford, and Transylvania County officials also reported snow and ice on most roads, and said the snowflakes were still falling heavily Wednesday night.
