NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Emergency crews responded to an apartment fire in South Nashville on Saturday morning.

The fire was first reported around 8:45 a.m. at the Bavaria Apartments located in the 4500 block of Packard Drive.

Heavy smoke was billowing out of the windows when crews arrived.

They evacuated the three-story, multi-family apartment complex.

Crews say a water heater caught fire. Flames then spread to the attic, where the fire spread throughout the building.

At least five units are damaged and at least 10 people are affected.

The Red Cross is assisting the affected families.
