Near-miss saved many lives in Bellevue plane crash

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

As many as 300 people were inside the Bellevue YMCA when an airplane crashed just outside the building Monday at a busy hour.

Four people inside the plane were killed. And, yet, had the plane come down just a few extra yards over, this would have been a much different story.

The nearest point to the crash was the Y's family pool, which, on a day Metro schools were closed, was full of moms and dads and kids.

"It was an incredibly close call, and we were just incredibly fortunate that more people were not harmed as a result of the crash," said YMCA spokeswoman Jessica Fain. "Obviously we're still learning details in terms of what happened, but it certainly seems like the near-miss saved many, many lives."

Amanda Blackie's teenage daughter was teaching swimming lessons when the plane crashed. She called her mom to tell her what happened.

"When she first called me, she was in such shock that I thought she was teasing. She was very jittery, and I was like, 'That can't be true.' Then I heard the sirens. And when I got back in touch with her, she was totally a basket case," Blackie said.

There were so many people nearby who witnessed the horrible sight, including many children.

"It was just heading straight for the ground, and it didn't look right," said 14-year-old witness Nic Bates. "It was just aiming straight for the ground. Then it blew up, just a big flame."

There are no reports of injuries to anyone who was on the ground or to the YMCA building, but several cars, mostly belonging to staff members, were damaged and will not be allowed to move until further notice from investigators.

YMCA officials said the facility will be closed for the second straight day on Wednesday as the National Transportation Safety Board continues its investigation into the crash.
